Power Shooting Fundamentals
The instep (laces) shot is used for powerful strikes from distance — long shots, clearances, and finishing in front of goal. It generates the most power of any shooting technique.
How to Execute It
1. Approach angle
Approach the ball at a slight angle (around 30-45 degrees), not straight on.
2. Plant foot
Place your non-kicking foot beside the ball, slightly in front, pointing toward the target.
3. Contact point
Strike the ball with your laces (the top of your foot), pointing your toes down and locking your ankle.
4. Body lean and follow-through
Lean your upper body slightly forward over the ball to keep the shot low, and follow through fully toward the target.
Practice Drill
Set up a target area on a wall or goal. From 10-15 meters, strike 10 shots focusing on technique first, then gradually increase power. Track how many hit the target zone.
Common Mistakes
- Leaning back on contact — causes the ball to fly over the target
- Not locking the ankle — reduces power and accuracy
- Approaching the ball straight on — limits hip rotation and power
This is the technique behind most powerful long-range goals — practice it regularly with both feet.
