What is Rondo?
Rondo is a possession drill made famous by Barcelona, where a group of players in a circle keep the ball away from one or two defenders in the middle. It builds passing speed, first touch, spatial awareness, and decision-making under pressure.
Setup
- 5 players total: 4 on the outside of a circle (about 6-8 meters in diameter), 1 defender in the middle
- The 4 outside players try to keep possession using one or two-touch passes
- The defender presses to win the ball or force a bad pass
Rules
1. Touch limit
Outside players are limited to two touches maximum (advanced players: one touch only).
2. Rotation
If the defender wins the ball or it goes out, the player whose pass was intercepted (or who lost the ball) becomes the new defender.
3. Movement
Outside players should constantly adjust their positions to create passing angles, not stand still.
Coaching Points
- Encourage players to check their shoulders before receiving the ball
- Reward quick combination passes that bypass the defender
- Increase difficulty by reducing the circle size or limiting touches
Why It Works
Rondo compresses match-realistic pressure into a small space, forcing rapid decisions. Just 10-15 minutes of Rondo at the start of training dramatically improves passing accuracy and confidence on the ball.
