Winning the Ball Cleanly
Tackling is about winning the ball, not the player. A well-timed, legal tackle is one of the most valuable defensive skills in football.
Key Techniques
1. The block tackle
Approach the opponent directly, plant the standing foot firmly, and block the ball with the inside of the foot at the moment of contact, with a firm ankle and eyes on the ball.
2. The poke tackle
From a slight angle, extend the leg to poke the ball away from the feet of the opponent without committing the full body weight.
3. Timing
The best moment to tackle is when the ball is slightly away from the feet of the opponent, never dive in when they are in full control.
Practice Drill
With a partner, one player dribbles slowly while the other shadows and times a block tackle when the ball is exposed. Switch roles after 5 attempts each. Focus on timing, not aggression.
Common Mistakes
- Diving in early – easy to be dribbled past
- Leading with studs up – dangerous and likely to be a foul
- Watching the body of the opponent instead of the ball
Clean, well-timed tackling wins possession back for the team without giving away fouls or cards.
